Text Box: Hypnotherapy treatment for Pain control

Hypnotherapy is now widely accepted as a method of pain relief ; it is even sometimes used on people under-going surgical procedures without anaesthetic using only hypnotherapy, though these are extreme occurrences.
Pain happens as messages are sent via the nervous system, to the brain which then tells us that we are feeling it, hypnotherapists work by teaching the brain how to stop interpreting these signals and telling our body to react accordingly. Its aim is to give control of the pain back to the person, instead of the pain being the controlling issue, with the hope of encouraging a more positive approach to pain management.
There are two main theories as to how hypnotherapy can aid in pain relief and altering a person’s perception of pain. It is believed, acute pain is treated by using powerful suggestions aimed at reducing pain associated anxiety and by lowering the importance of pain, to the individual. Chronic pain is tackled by addressing the pain head-on and dealing with its physical and psychological effects as they occur to offer pain relief.
We know about hypnotherapy's effectiveness as a pain management tool largely through the research and publications of Ernest Hillgard, former emeritus Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, who used a control research group to show that hypnosis was highly effective in managing pain.
Text Box: Pain Relief and Pain Management Using Hypnosis

Pain should never be treated for its own sake, but if the underlying cause is known and your doctor gives permission, hypnosis can be very effective in relieving pain.

It is important that the cause of the pain has been investigated by a medical practitioner Pain is sometimes a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, for example, a persistent headache could be a symptom of a brain tumour. If the hypnotherapist were to treat the headache in this example, before the root cause of the pain was known, then this could well lead to the brain tumour not being diagnosed for longer. However, if the patient had already been to their doctor and more serious causes of the headaches had been eliminated, then it would be fine for the hypnotherapist to proceed with treatment.
