The American comedian Jerry Seinfeld once observed that since stage fright is the most common fear, and death is the second-most common, then a person at a funeral should feel more pity for the person giving the reading than the person in the coffin.

Text Box: What is Performance Anxiety?

Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, fear, or persistent phobia which you feel when you are about to perform in front of an audience, even when sometimes the audience is not ‘live’ at the time, foe example when performing in front of a camera on in a recording studio. Performance anxiety may often be seen among such public performers as athletes and sportsmen, actors and musicians. Here it appears as a fear of "underperforming" (whether in the eyes of the viewing public or that of later critical reaction).

Quite often stage fright arises in a mere thought of a performance, often a long time ahead. It has numerous symptoms: fluttering or pounding heart, tremor in the hands and legs, diarrhoea or vomiting, facial nerve tics, dry mouth. Stage fright may be observed in people of all experience and background, from beginners to professionals.

Performance anxiety is a fear of negative evaluation and is typically seen in activities such as acting, public speaking, performing (sporting or artistic), driving tests, examinations, sexual activity etc.
A confident person will maintain an external focus. However, a person experiencing performance anxiety will maintain an internal focus and therefore may:
Monitor bodily symptoms.
Be aware of negative self-statements.
Regress to a negative past experience.
A ‘fight or flight’ response will then be triggered, as the performance is then perceived as being threatening.

Hypnotherapy can be highly beneficial in the treatment of public speaking, stage fright and performance anxiety.

The treatment is tailored for each individual, but is broadly as follows:-

Our approach to public speaking, stage fright and performance is to use advanced analytical hypnotherapy to ascertain the original cause(s) or triggers of your anxiety problems. In this way we aim to resolve them at the point in time that they first occurred.

We also look for the ‘parts’ of the subconscious that get ‘satisfaction’ from these anxiety’s, thoughts and behaviours and resolve them.  Powerful suggestion therapy would then be used to overcome any residual 'learnt habit' problems along with feelings and behaviours that may have 'snowballed' over the years. Further powerful suggestion and NLP techniques would be used to ‘anchor’ positive feelings and to ‘rehearse’ confident scenarios.
